Jillian Verzino is an Italian American artist whose curiosity in painting is as charged by her profession as an organic vegetable farmer as it is by her Catholic upbringing. The decorative and coordinated compositions filled by vegetative, floral forms are both erotic and ordered. The pulsing, swollen, fruit-like forms entangled with angular, harder, unbending boundaries are unavoidable suggestions of what remains on the artist’s mind while both painting and farming - that everything earthly boils down to sex and death. Her work is heavily informed by the marble inlay work of Catholic churches throughout Italy and, more broadly, religious art during the Byzantine, Medieval, and Renaissance eras.
